On the other hand, the overall music scene here in the US was pretty much in a state of utter disarray back then so there was only so much a legit self-contained band like them (amidst a SEVERELY declining R&B climate, mind you) could do on their end. Sad that 'Definition Of A Band' didn't fully put Mint Condition on the mainstream map for good at the time, especially coming off their breakthrough 1993 sophomore effort 'From The Mint Factory'. No wonder they ended up calling their own unique sound 'Gumbo' back in the day. Every single track has something worthwhile to offer both musically and lyrically, so much so that I myself ended up knowing just about all of them from repeated listens (lol)! And speaking of the music, they cover quite a bit of ground ranging from emotionally-charged contemporary R&B ballads to genuine "old-school"-flavored funk/soul jams to sweet jazzy interludes to even unexpected rock fusion exercises like the standout track 'Sometimes' (featuring the debut of renowned session drummer Chris "Daddy" Dave). Definition of a Band: 1997 'You Don't Have to Hurt No More' 32. This was the Mint album that properly introduced me to the band back during the late-90s and I must say it's still my ALL-TIME favorite from them to this very day! Strictly from a songwriting standpoint, I have yet to hear a more consistent collection of strong material from beginning to end by these fellas than what is featured on here.
